Doing our part for National Diabetes Month

National Diabetes Month is a time when the country officially recognizes the implications of diabetes in the United States and around the world. Everyone is getting involved; the President, the ADA, and the JDRF.

Telcare’s getting involved too: the Blue Circle Campaign is “the universal symbol for diabetes. The purpose of the diabetes symbol is to give diabetes a common identity. Until 2006, there was no global symbol for diabetes. It aims to support all existing efforts to raise awareness about diabetes, inspire new activities, and bring diabetes to the attention of the general public.”

We love the goals of this mission. To do our part, we’ve added the Blue Circle to our Twitter picture and our Facebook picture. Make sure to do your part by adding the Blue Circle to your social network profiles, too!

What patients and professionals are saying…

The following excerpts have been taken from Usability Studies that Telcare has held. Patients and Healthcare Professionals were asked to perform a range of functions on the Telcare BGM and the MyTelcare.com web portal. Here’s some of our favorites:

• All the different ways [MyTelcare.com] displays data (1 day, 7, 30, etc.) and how easy it is to switch between them. I also like that the [Telcare BGM] will automatically upload the blood glucose data, and that I don’t have to hook anything up.

• Easy to use, provides comprehensive information, immediate feedback; may motivate individuals to be better patients…and more responsive to health needs. Hurry up and put it on the market!

• It’s very convenient to use because it keeps track of all the BG readings and automatically lets you know how in or out of range you are. With the cell phone chip, it allows the patient to avoid the hassle of keeping track of numbers and keep in contact with one’s health professional easily!

• Determining the highs and lows will let me know my number more accurately

• Easy to use and understand…ability to view by testing time (before or after breakfast, etc.)

• [I like] being able to communicate with [your] doctor on an ongoing basis, as well as keeping track of things yourself.

• I liked how the information was easy to interpret and how average reading were displayed with graphs and charts.

• Simple and easy instructions.

• EASY TO NAVIGATE, EASY TO UNDERSTAND, [AND] PARTICULARLY LIKED THE GRAPHS.

• Screen display + printing very good – very readable

• Great graphics on meter very intuitive

• Organized and clear content, good job!

• Everything looks great!

• Great monitor! Good Luck!

• I liked the features- saving the data on the computer to view all your test results at any time

• Pictures are very helpful. It helps also that there is much separation between the steps and that the page setup is not too busy

• Looks great!

• I found just doing it once or twice would make everything very easy!

• When does it become available?

• Seems like an exciting new option!

• I love this machine

Is your household diabetes friendly?

Being a person with diabetes (Type 1, dx 2003), I know first hand of how important it is to have a supportive family and an engaged professional team in order to even come close to mastering the diabetes beast. To be candid, I have taken these things for granted and figured everyone had a support team that was similar to mine.

Last night, I had an eye-opening conversation with a friend who is in her first year of residency at George Washington University. She told me that this type of supportive family environment is not always the case.

The children that she saw (ages 5 – 13) with Type 1 diabetes had an average glucose number of around 250 mg/dL. I was astonished.

I asked her why she thought the blood sugars were so high and her answer was that it had a lot to do with the parents not (1) educating themselves about Type 1 diabetes (“But orange juice is healthy for growing kids,” one mother said) and (2) refusing to make household changes for the sake of the Type 1 child (“The whole family likes ice cream and I’m simply not going to remove it even though Chris often indulges too much,” said another mother.)

Parents: What have you done to educate yourself on diabetes? What are some simple steps other families can take to help their child with diabetes?
